Our current state of happiness depends on the levels of FOUR chemicals in our Brain.
We just have to remember "DOSE" - Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. There are many ways to get these chemicals and stay Happy.

| Happy Hormones |
DOPAMINE (The REWARD Hormone)Dopamine is also known as “The reward Hormone”. It’s very important for focus and concentration. It is released after our brain achieves any goal, no matter how small our goal is. Neural pathways in our brains get stronger as we achieve more goals regularly. So we should set small, easily achievable goals, and after achieving them we get lots of dopamine.
Ways to Increase Dopamine are-
- Get enough sleep
- Listen to music
- Do something creative
- Having a balanced/healthy diet
- Meditate / Exercise
- Try something new
- Achieve our goals
OXYTOCIN (The LOVE Hormone)
Oxytocin “the love hormone” increases empathic feelings and also builds trust. We get this hormone by spending time with our loved ones, holding hands and cuddling. Or petting our pet.
Ways to increase Oxytocin are-
- Holding hands
- Spend time with friends
- Play with a pet
- Show affection
- Hug someone you love
- Appreciate someone
SEROTONIN (The GOOD MOOD)
Serotonin can be increased by being outside in bright daylight. Daylight is a standard treatment for seasonal depression. 90% of serotonin is formed in your gut. So if we have a healthy gut, we’ll have lot of serotonin.
Ways to increase Serotonin are-
- Eat a healthy meal
- Enjoy the sunshine
- Try yoga and meditation
- Swimming
- Walk in nature
ENDORPHINS (The PAIN RELIEVER)
Endorphins are our body’s natural painkillers. And they also regulate the fight or flight instinct. Doing something we find scary will flood our body with endorphins. Even something as simple as watching a scary movie, or eating spicy food can fill your body with endorphins.
Ways to increase Endorphins are-
- Watch a movie
- Running or walking
- Laughter
- Essential Oils
- Dark Chocolate
- Exercise
Both endorphins and dopamine provide a similar experience. Endorphins are released in a sudden burst, and dopamine is released over a more extended period.
